Sparks inside radiator when he automatically kicks off

My di Longhi oil-filled electric radiator seems to work reasonably well, but two things concern me. When the radiator reaches a certain temperature and automatically shuts off, you can see electric sparks through the vent holes on the side. (We are very careful not to have anything on or near the radiator.) Also, the circuit breaker went off recently, while the radiator was on. Is the unit defective? Should I suspect problems with the wiring in the wall? I look forward to your response.
